wearelivingatanextraordinarymomentinhistory.therearesomedayswheniamveryoptimistic,andthereareotherdays,ihavetoconfe,wheni''mpeimistic.iguethatjustgoeswiththeterritory.butwhatiamaolutelyconvincedofisthatourcommonvalues,valuessharedandexemplifiedbyourcountryandbyisrael,aretherightvalues,thevaluesthateveryoneshouldhaveanoortunitytobeexposedtoandtounderstandand,hopefully,toemulate.

thereisnootheroptionintheworldthat,astomfriedmansaid,hasbeenflattened.wecancommunicatewitheachother,wecanbetraortedoverlongdistancesquickly,wecanfolloweventsinotherplacesfaraway.andtherefore,weneedtorecognizethatourstruggle,ourongoingstruggleforfreedomanddemocracyistheonlywaythatwecaneurethatinthisshrinking,flattenedworld,ourchildrenwillhaveachanceforpeaceandsecurity.

wecaotshrinkfromthedutythatthistimehasimposeduponus.wecanhavegreat--andweshould--greatdebatesanddiscuioaboutwhatarethebestwaystoproceedandtopursuethesecommonobjectives.weneedthat.weneedthatdebateanddiscuionbecauseweareinunchartedterritory.noonehasalltheawers,andweneedthecombinedintelligenceandgoodideasofasmanypeopleaspoible.

sowhatyouaredoingtodayisnotonlyonbehalfofaipac,notonlyonbehalfofisrael,notonlyonbehalfofthestrongandenduringrelatiohipbetweentheunitedstatesandisrael;itistrulyonbehalfofthekindofworldwewantforourchildrenand,forthoseluckyenough,grandchildren.
