Goodmorning.Nextweek,theUnitedStatesSenatewillbegindebateonacotitutionalamendmentthatdefinesmarriageintheUnitedStatesastheunionofamanandwoman.OnMonday,Iwillmeetwithacoalitionofcommunityleaders,cotitutionalscholars,familyandcivicorganizatio,andreligiousleaders.They’reRepublica,Democrats,andindependentswho’vecometogethertosuortthisamendment.Today,IwanttoexplainwhyIsuorttheMarriageProtectionAmendment,andwhyI’murgingCongretopaitandsendittothestatesforratification.

Marriageisthemostenduringandimportanthumanititution,honoredandencouragedinallculturesandbyeveryreligiousfaith.Agesofexperiencehavetaughtusthatthecommitmentofahuandanda版权所有wifetoloveandtoserveoneanotherpromotesthewelfareofchildrenandthestabilityofsociety.Marriagecaotbecutofffromitscultural,religious,andnaturalrootswithoutweakeningthisgoodinfluenceonsociety.Government,byrecognizingandprotectingmarriage,servestheinterestsofall.

Inourfreesociety,peoplehavetherighttochoosehowtheylivetheirlives.Andinafreesociety,decisioaboutsuchafundamentalsocialititutionasmarriageshouldbemadebythepeople--notbythecourts.TheAmericanpeoplehaveokenclearlyonthisiue,boththroughtheirrepresentativesandattheballotbox.In1996,CongrearovedtheDefeeofMarriageActbyoverwhelmingbipartisanmajoritiesinboththeHouseandSenate,andPresidentClintonsigneditintolaw.Andsincethen,votersin19stateshavearovedamendmentstotheirstatecotitutiothatprotectthetraditionaldefinitionofmarriage.Andtoday,45ofthe50stateshaveeitherastatecotitutionalamendmentorstatutedefiningmarriageastheunionofamanandawoman.Theseamendmentsandlawsexpreabroadcoeusinourcountryforprotectingtheititutionofmarriage.

Unfortunately,activistjudgesandsomelocalofficialshavemadeanaggreiveattempttoredefinemarriageinrecentyears.Since20xx,statecourtsinWashington,California,Maryland,andNewYorkhaveoverturnedlawsprotectingmarriageinthosestates.AndinNebraska,afeder
