THEPRESIDENT:
Goodmorning.AsIenterthefinalweekofmypresidency,I’mextraordinarilygratefulforalltheprogrewe’vemadetogethertheselasteightyears--buildingthestrongesteconomyinageneration,renewingourethicofreoibility,andstrengtheningthebondsofcommunityandfamilyallacroAmerica.TodayIwanttotalkaboutourprogreinreducingyouthviolenceandnewstewe’retakingtomakeourcommunitiesevensafer.

Overthepastfewyears,terribletragediesatColumbineandotherschoolshaveforcedustotakeahardlookatyouthviolence,andanevenharderlookatwhateachofuscandoandmustdotoeurethatsuchtragediesdonothaenagain.

Althoughtherearenosimplesolutio,recentevidencesuggestswearemovingintherightdirection.Accordingtothelatestdata,violentcrimebyyoungpeoplehasbeencutnearlyinhalfsince1993;schoolyarddeathshavedroeddramatically.Thesearebothimportantdeclinesthatreflectthelowestnationalcrimeratein25years.

But,still,wehavemoretodo.Atmydirection,theWhiteHouseCouncilonYouthViolencehasdevelopedanewweiteandtoll-freeinformationlinetohelpparentsandeducatorsgetthefactstheyneedtoreduceyouthviolence.Theweiteaddreiswww.safeyouth.org.Andthetoll-freenumberis1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.That’swww.safeyouth.org,and1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.

I’malsopleasedtoreleaseanotherimportantresource--aguideforparentsoncommunicatingbetterwithteenagers.ItincorporatesthelatestresearchaswellasthebestideasfromtheWhiteHouseConferenceonTeenagers,whichHillaryandIooredlastyear.We’lldistributethispublicationnationwidethroughtheweite,thetoll-freelineandwiththeaistanceofschoolprincipals,schoolnursesandpediatricia.

Likeallparents,HillaryandIknowit’snotalwayseasytotalkwithyourchildrenaboutseitivesubjects.That’swhythisnewguideissoveryvaluable--becauseitteachesparentshowtolistenmorecarefullytotheirchildrenandnurturerelatiohibuiltontrust,love,disciplineandreect.
