Goodmorning.ThisMonday,ourNationwillmarkthe5thaiversaryoftheattacksofSeptemberthe11th,2001.Onthissolemnoccasion,Americawilloerveadayofprayerandremembrance,andLauraandIwilltraveltoNewYorkCity,Peylvania,andthePentagontotakepartinmemorialceremonies.OurNationhonorsthememoryofeverypersonwelostonthatdayofterror,andwepraythattheAlmightywillcontinuetocomfortthefamilieswhohadsomuchtakenawayfromthem.

Onthisaiversary,wealsorememberthebrutalityoftheenemywhostruckourcountryandrenewourresolvetodefeatthisenemyandsecureafutureofpeaceandfreedom.

SothisweekI'vegivenaseriesofeechesaboutthenatureofourenemy,thestakesofthestruggle,andtheprogrewehavemadeduringthepastfiveyears.OnTuesdayinWashington,Idescribedintheterroristsownwordswhattheybelieve,whattheyhopetoaccomplish,andhowtheyintendtoaccomplishit.Weknowwhattheterroristsintend,becausetheyhavetoldus.TheyhopetoestablishatotalitarianIslamicempireacrotheMiddleEast,whichtheycallaCaliphate,whereallwouldberuledaccordingtotheirhatefulideology.

OsamabinLadenhascalledthe9/11attacks,"AgreatsteptowardstheunityofMuslimsandestablishingtherighteous[Caliphate]."AlQaedaanditsalliesrejectanypoibilityofcoexistencewiththosetheycall"infidels."HearthewordsofOsamabinLaden:"Deathisbetterthanlivingonthisearthwiththeuelieversamongstus."Wemusttakethewordsoftheseextremistsseriously,andwemustactdecisivelytostopthemfromachievingtheirevilaims.

OnWednesdayattheWhiteHouse,IdescribedforthefirsttimeaCIAprogramweestablishedafter9/11todetainandquestionkeyterroristleadersandoperatives,sowecanpreventnewterroristattacks.ThisprogramhasbeeninvaluabletothesecurityofAmericaanditsallies,andhelpedusidentifyandcapturemenwhoourintelligencecommunitybelieveswerekeyarchitectsoftheSeptemberthe11thattacks.
