sixyearsago,icametoofficeinatimeofdoubtforamerica,withoureconomytroubled,ourdeficithigh,ourpeopledivided.someevenwonderedwhetherourbestdayswerebehindus.butacrothisnation,inathousandneighborhoods,ihaveseen,evenamidstthepainanduncertaintyofreceion,therealheartandcharacterofamerica.

tonight,asideliverthelaststateoftheunionaddreforthe20thcentury,nooneanywhereintheworldcandoubttheenduringresolveandboundlecapacityoftheamericanpeopletoworktowardthat"moreperfectunion"ofourfounders''dreams.

wearenow,attheendofacentury,whengenerationaftergenerationofamericaaweredthecalltogreatne,overcomingdepreion,liftingupthedioeed,bringingdownbarrierstoracialprejudice,buildingthelargestmiddleclainhistory,wiingtwoworldwarsandthe"longtwilightstruggle"ofthecoldwar.

wemustallbeprofoundlygratefulforthemagnificentachievementsofourforbearersinthiscentury.
