thankyou.thankyou,presidentchen,chairmenren,vicepresidentchi,viceministerwei.wearedelightedtobeheretodaywithaverylargeamericandelegation,includingthefirstladyandourdaughter,whoisastudentatstanford,oneoftheschoolswithwhichbeijinguniversityhasarelatiohip.wehavesixmembersoftheunitedstatescongrethesecretaryofstate;secretaryofcommerce;thesecretaryofagriculture;thechairmanofourcouncilofeconomicadvisorsenatorsaer,ourambaador;thenationalsecurityadvisorandmychiefofstaff,amongothers.isaythattoillustratetheimportancethattheunitedstatesplacesonourrelatiohipwithchina.iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecenteialyearofyouruniversity.gongxi,beida.(alause.)asi''msureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoyenchinguniversitywhichwasfoundedbyamericanmiionaries.manyofitswonderfulbuildingsweredesignedbyanamericanarchitect.thousandsofamericastudentsandprofeorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.wefeelaecialkihipwithyou.iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantreectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.injuneof1919,thefirstpresidentofyenchinguniversity,johnleightonstuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddreontheseverygrounds.attheaointedhour,heaeared,butnostudentsaeared.theywerealloutleadingthemay4thmovementforchina''spoliticalandculturalrenewal.whenireadthis,ihopedthatwheniwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someonewouldbesittinghere.andithankyouforbeinghere,verymuch.(alause.)

overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000students.yourgraduatesarereadthroughoutchinaandaroundtheworld.youhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofasia.lastyear,20percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.andinthisaiversaryyear,morethanamillionpeopleinchina,asia,andbe
