thistuesdaymarksthefirstaiversaryofkatrina--oneofthedeadliestandmostcostlynaturaldisastersinamericanhistory.inmiiii,thestormwipedoutvirtuallyeverythingalongan80-milestretchofthecoast,flatteninghomesanddestroyingentirecommunities.inlouisiana,floodingleft80percentofthecityofneworleaunderwater.thehumancostswereevenmoreterrible.morethanathousandpeopledied,countlefamilieslosttheirhomesandlivelihoods,andteofthousandsofmen,women,andchildrenwereforcedtofleetheregionandleavebehindeverythingtheyknew.
