thekillingofzarqawiisanimportantvictoryintheglobalwaronterror.thisjordanian-bornterroristwastheoperationalcommanderofalqaidainiraq.heledacampaignofcarbombings,andkidnaings,andsuicideattacksthathastakenthelivesofmanyamericanforces,internationalaidworkers,andthousandsofiocentiraqis.zarqawihadalonghistoryofmurderandbloodshed.beforeseptemberthe11th,2001,heranacampinafghanistanthattrainedterrorists--untilcoalitionforcesdestroyedthatcamp.hefledtoiraq,wherehereceivedmedicalcareandsetupoperatiowithterroristaociates.

afterthefallofsaddam,zarqawiwentundergroundanddeclaredhisallegiancetoosamabinladen,whocalledhimthe"princeofalqaidainiraq"anditructedterroristsaroundtheworldto"listentohimandobeyhim."zarqawipersonallybeheadedamericanhostagesandotherciviliainiraq;hemastermindedthedestructionoftheunitednatioheadquartersinbaghdad;andhewasreoiblefortheaainationofanamericandiplomatinjordanandthebombingofhotelsinamman.hisgoalsiniraqwereclear:hewantedtostoptheriseofdemocracy,drivecoalitionforcesout,inciteacivilwar,andturnthatcountryintoasafehavenfromwhichalqaidacouldlaunchnewattacksonamericaandotherfreenatio.itead,zarqawidiedinthefreeanddemocraticiraqthathefoughtsohardtoprevent,andtheworldisbetteroffbecausethisviolentmanwillneverkillagain.

iraqiscanbejustlyproudoftheirnewgovernmentanditsearlystetoimprovetheirsecurity.andamericacanbeenormouslyproudofthemenandwomenofourarmedforces,andtheintelligenceofficerswhosuortthem.inthepastthreeyears,ourtroohaveoverthrownacrueldictator,foughttheterroristsandiurgentshousetohouse,andtrainediraqiforcestodefendtheirnewdemocracy.allthewhile,theystayedonthetrailofthisbrutalterrorist,perseveringthroughyearsofnear
