WelcometoWashingtonforthisextraordinaryAIPACconference.I'mtoldthattheattendancefarsurpaesanyotherconference,andit'salwaysbeenoneofthebiggestgatheringsthatWashingtonhostseveryyear.SoIcongratulateyouforbeinghereinthesenumberswiththisenergyandenthusiasm.

IalsothankmyfriendBernice,whohasservedsowellonbehalfofAIPAC,andcongratulateHowardFriedman,theincomingpresident.IthankHowardKohr,yourexecutivedirector;AmyFriedkiandeveryonewhoworkssohardforAIPACnotjustwhenthereisagreatgathering,likethisconference,buteverysingleday,workingwithusintheCongreworkinghereinWashington.

IwanttotakejustafewminutestodiscusomeofthesignificantchallengesfacingtheUnitedStates,Israelandourworldtoday.Asyouknowbetterthanmost,eventsintheMiddleEastareaolutelycriticaltoourhopeforasafer,moresecureworld,aworldinwhicheverynationisfreefromthethreatofglobalterrorism.Andastrong,lastingrelatiohipbetweentheUnitedStatesandIsraeliseentialtooureffortstobuildthatworldofpeaceandsecurity.

Asallofusknow,ourfuturehereinthiscountryisintertwinedwiththefutureofIsraelandtheMiddleEast.Nowthereisalotthatwecouldtalkabout,andobviouslymuchhasbeendiscued.ButintheshortperiodthatIhavebeengiventhehonorofaddreingyou,IwanttostartbyfocusingonourdeepandlastingbondbetweentheUnitedStatesandIsrael.

Now,thesearebondsthataremorethansharedinterests.Thesearebondsforgedinacommonstruggleforhumanrights,fordemocracy,forfreedom.ThesearebondsthatpredatethecreationofthestateofIsrael,thatreallypredatethecreationoftheUnitedStatesbecausetheyarerootedinfundamentalbeliefsandvaluesaboutthedignityandrightsofmenandwomentoliveinfreedom,freefromfear,freefromoreion.Andthereisnodoubtthattheseincrediblystrongbondsandvalueswillremainasthelodestarofourrelat
