，并存在两种或两种以上文化历史背景条件下，可能或必须运用两种语言进行交流的情景。这两种语言中，通常有一种是母语或本族语，而另一种语言往往是后天习得的第二种语言或者是外国语。《朗曼应用语言学词典》所给的定义是：
    
   a book which is written in two languages
    
   (一本用两种语言即双语写成的书)
    
   a person who knows and uses two languages
    
   (一个能运用两种语言的人)
    
   in everyday use the word bilingual usually means a person who speaks, reads, or understands two languages equally well (a balanced bilingual), but a bilingual person usually has a better knowledge of one language than of the other.
    
   (在日常运用中bilingual的意思通常是指一个人他能将一门外语和本族语基本等同地运用于听、说、读、写，当然他的母语语言知识和能力通常是大于第二语言的。)
    
   for example, he / she may(举例来说，他/她可能：)
    
   a) be able to read and write in only one language
    
   仅仅能用一种语言来读写(换言之，使用一种语言来读写，而用另一种语言来听说。)
    
   b) use each language in different types of situation, e.g. one language at home and the other at work.
