economicsecurityalsocanbeaneentialelementoffreedom.itisrecognizedintheunitednatiocovenantoneconomic,social,andculturalrights.inchina,youhavemadeextraordinarystridesinnurturingthatliberty,andreadingfreedomfromwant,tobeasourceofstrengthtoyourpeople.incomesareup,povertyisdowpeopledohavemorechoicesofjo,andtheabilitytotravel--theabilitytomakeabetterlife.buttruefreedomincludesmorethaneconomicfreedom.inamerica,webelieveitisaconceptwhichisindivisible.

overthepastfourdays,ihaveseenfreedominmanymanifestatioinchina.ihaveseenthefreshshootsofdemocracygrowinginthevillagesofyourheartland.ihavevisitedavillagethatchoseitsownleadersinfreeelectio.ihavealsoseenthecellphones,thevideoplayers,thefaxmachinescarryingideas,informationandimagesfromallovertheworld.i''veheardpeopleeaktheirmindsandihavejoinedpeopleinprayerinthefaithofmyownchoosing.inallthesewaysifeltasteadybreezeoffreedom.

thequestionis,wheredowegofromhere?howdoweworktogethertobeontherightsideofhistorytogether?morethan50yearsago,hushi,oneofyourgreatpoliticalthinkersandateacheratthisuniversity,saidthesewords:"nowsomepeoplesaytomeyoumustsacrificeyourindividualfreedomsothatthenationmaybefree.butireply,thestruggleforindividualfreedomisthestruggleforthenation''sfreedom.thestruggleforyourowncharacteristhestruggleforthenation''scharacter."

weamericabelievehushiwasright.webelieveandourexperiencedemotratesthatfreedomstrengthestabilityandhelnatiotochange.
